The variety of written and spoken English that is the common language and carries prestige within the Australian context.
Sociolect
A variety of language used by a group of people who share aspects of their identity, such as: age, gender, sexuality, occupation, interests, aspirations, and education.
Ethnolect
Language varieties that are specific to communities based on an ethnocultural heritage.
Idiolect
An individual’s unique use of language, shaped by their experiences, background, and context.
Overt Norms
Linguistic behaviours that are valued by the wider society.
Covert Norms
Linguistic behaviours that are only valued by a specific group or community.
Prestige
The high status or respect that is given to something/someone based on perceived importance, success, or cultural value.
