- responders are free to answer in any way they wish
- produce qualitative data
- may be difficult to analyze
3
Q
what is a closed question
A
- offers a fixed number of responses
- produces quantitative data
- easy to analyse
- lack debth and detail
4
Q
strength of questionaires
A
- cost effective
- can gather large numbers of data quickly as it is easily distributed to a large number of people
- can be completed without the researcher being present
- data produced is straightforward to analyse
- data lends itself to statistical analysis and comparisons can be made using graphs and charts
5
Q
limitation of questionnaire
A
- responses may not always be truthful
- social desirability bias where participants present themselves in a positive light
- response bias where respondents reply in a similar way (always ticking yes)to complete the question quickly
6
Q
evaluation of structured interviews
A
- straightforward to replicate due to standardized form
- reduce differences between interviewers - cannot deviate from the topic to explain the question
- limits the richness of the data
7
Q
evaluation of unstructured interviews
A
- more flexibility
- interviewers can follow up points as they arise
- more likely to gain insight into the worldview of the interviewee - interviewer bias
- analysis of data is not straightforward
- social desirability bias but can be combated with building a rapport with the participant
8
Q
what is a structured interview
A
- made up of predetermined questions that are asked in a fixed order
9
Q
what is an unstructured interview
A
- like a conversation
- no set questions
- free flowing
- interviewee is encouraged to expand and elaborate their answers
