Self Report Methods Flashcards
Self report

Two self report methods
Questionnaires and interviews
Open question
The participant can give any answer they wish - qualitative
Closed question
There are a set number of responses which the participant selected from quantitative
Questionnaires
A self report methods with written questions which could be open or closed - qualitative
Fixed choice option
Includes a list of possible options and respondents are required to indicate those that apply them
Likert scale
The respondent indicates their agreement with a statement using a scale - strongly agree to strongly disagree
Rating scales
Participants select a value that represents their strength or feelings about a particular topic
Weakness of questionaries
Closed questionnaires aren’t detailed enough, people could lie due to social desire-ability bias, potential of leading questions
3 types of interview
Structured, unstructured, semi structured
Structured interview
Made up of pre determined set of questions that are asked in a fixed order
Unstructured interview
Works like a conversation with no set questions where a general topic will be discussed
Semi- structured interview
Most common interview, list of questions worked out in advance with interviewers able to ask follow up questions based on previous answers
Strengths of unstructured interviews
More detail can be obtained from each participant, information can be accessed that might not be revealed by using predominant questions, respondents tend to be more honest so social desirability is less of a problem
Strengths of structured interview
Requires less interviewing skill, easier to analyse the answers, can easily be repeated because the questions are standardised
