What is self efficacy?

Describe performance accomplishments
SE is affected by past experiences, so the coach should remind the performer of past success in similar situations
describe vicarious reinforcement
coach should ask a performer who shares similar characteristics to show them the task is possible for them
describe verbal persuasion
giving praise and positive reinforcement increases SE.
There should be use of significant others.
describe emotional arousal
coach should allow performer to cope with and control their arousal levels
What two strategies should a coach use to control performer’s arousal levels?
- Somatic

What does Vealey’s model state?
athletes who have a high sports confidence in one sporting situation will feel more confident in the ability to succeed in others

innate levels of confidence
e.g generally confident in a range of sports

performer’s level of confidence in a specific situation
What is competitive orientation?
how driven the performer is and the types of goal they may have set themselves.

What is the effect of homefield advantage on performance?
- usually perform better when playing at home
- supporters also present - may increase confidence
- venue/environment is familiar - keeps arousal levels low
