What is preventative care?
Vitamins, dietary supplements, exercise, proper diet, good hygiene
What is sickness care?

Define behind-the-counter meds
Medications are available without a prescritpion from a physician but still require a pharmact to dispense it
What are some examples of behind-the-counter meds?
Sudafed, Plan B
Define nutritional/dietary dupplements
Products that are intended to supplement the diet and that bear or contain one of the following ingredients: A vitamin, mineral, herb, or amino acid

What are some examples of natural products?
Cranberry, garlic
What are some examples of inappropriate non-prescription medication use?
8% never read the drug label
48% admit taking more than the recommended dose or taking it sooner than recommended

Practice of using a known brand name for a new product with a similar use
- Creates problems for the pharmacists and patients when there are multiple products with similar contents and “hidden” contents
Can OTC have side effects?
YES! Even though most patients believe they can’t, all meds have a risk to them
What is special about herbal supplement that start with the letter G?
If taken with warfarin will increase the risk of bleeding
What is the pharmacists role in OTC therapy?
They can help pick out the right medication by assessing the symptoms and can counsel the patient on the meds
