self awareness Flashcards
what are the 2 types of self awareness
private self- match behaviour with internal standards(private thoughts, feelings, attitudes)
Public self- presenting yourself in a positive light(how others see you)
what is de-indivdualisation
reduced self awareness is a key component of de-individualization.where they lose there social self awareness and become antisocial as a consequence
what is a self schema
clear views on themselves. people are selfschematic on things that are important to them and aschematic on things that are not so much. e.g. if you are not tidy but it is not important to you then being tidy is not one of your self schemas.
issues with self schemas- some that are ridgidly compartmentalized can cause extreme mood swings if some self schemas are very positive and some very negative.
HIGGINS- self discrepancy theory
and what is self regulation
actual self- what we are
ideal self- want to be
ought self- social pressures/obligations- often related to anxiety- so its how we think we should be
self regulation is startegies we use to match our behaviors to an ideal or ought standard
regulatory focus theory
HIGGINS believed we have two
the promotion system (approach)- attainment of hopes and aspirations e.g. promotion students would set goals to achieve high grades- generates sensitivity to absense or presence of positive events
Prevention system (avoid)- attainment of duties and obligations- generates sensitivity to absence and presence of negative events. prevention focused students would focus on avoiding failure rather than high grades.
DARL BEM’S self perception theory
we learn knowledge about ourselves by making self attributions about ouselves. so we can attribute our own behaviour internally making inferences about ourselves.
over justification effect
explains how self attribution affects motivation- if u self attribute externally motivation is decreased - if u self attribute internally motivation increases. if motivation is reduced performance will be impaired. also linked to enjoyment and efficiency.
FESTINGERS social comparison theory
we can learn about ourselves by comparing our behaviors to others to establish the correct/socially approved way of thinking. we compare views to similar people and performance to people that are worse than ours. However sometimes this is not possible e.g. younger siblings would ahve to compare to more competent older siblings and this can reduce self esteem.
social comparison theory- how to reduce the effect of low self esteem
what is BIRGING
self evaluation maintenance model- try to downplay our similarity or with drawl from the relationship with that individual
BIRGING- basking in reflective glory name dropping to link yourself with desirable people in the group and thus improve peoples opinion of you.
what is the looking glass self
the self derived from seeing ourselves as others see us
what are some ways to construct a coherent sense of self ?
restrict your life to limited set of contexts as different selves will come into play with different contexts
keep revising you autobiography to accomodate new identities- sort of rewriting your history to work to your advantage
Attribute changes to self externally and others behaviours internally (ACTOR OBSERVER EFFECT)
Social identity theory
theory of group membership and inter group relations based on self categorization, social comparison and the construction of a shared self definition in terms of in group defining properties
self-categorization theory
turners theory of how the process of categorizing oneself as a group member produces social identity and group and inter group behaviors.
