Selective Debridement Flashcards
Sharp Debridement
Uses scalpel, scissors, and/or foceps to remove bad tissue, foreign materials, and/or debris from a wound
Used for wounds with large amount of thick, necrotic tissue but can also be used with cellulitis and sepsis**
Enzymatic Debridement
Topical application of enzymatic preparation to necrotic tissue on infected and non-infected wounds.
Done to establish a clean wound bed and should be discontinued once devitalized tissue is removed
Autolytic Debridement
Using body’s own mechanisms to remove nonviable tissue. Establishes a moist wound environment/rehydrates necrotic tissue and eschar facilitating enzymatic digestion of nonviable tissue
Should not be used with infected wounds**
