Selective breeding Flashcards
1
Q
Selective breeding
A
To select individuals with desirable characteristics and breed them together
2
Q
Selective breeding in plants
A
- Disease resistance in food crops
- Increased crop yield
- Hardness to weather conditions
- Better tasting fruit
3
Q
Problems with selective breeding
A
It leads to inbreeding which results in a reduction in the gene pool (reduction in the number of alleles)
Increased chances of organisms inheriting harmful genetic defects
Being vulnerable to new diseases
4
Q
Selective breeding in animals
A
Similar process to selective breeding in plants. Desired characteristics are bred together
5
Q
Natural selection
A
- Occurs naturally
- Results in development of populations with features that are better adapted to the environment
- Takes long time to occur
6
Q
Artificial selection
A
- Occurs when humans intervene
- Results in development of populations with features that are useful to humans not necessarily to the survival of the individual
- Takes less time as only individuals with desired features are allowed to reproduce
