what is the definition of selective breeding
when humans/farmers choose organisms with desirable characteristics & breed them together to produce offspring with those desirable characteristics- happens over many generations
what are reasons to selectively breed animals
-produce More milk, eggs, meat
-aesthetic reasons
-quality and quantity
-higher quality products
-hardiness in adverse conditions
-resistance to diseases+parasites
what does AI stand for
artificial insemination
what is AI
a method of elective breeding used to make an animal pregnant without sexual intercourse
why would farmers want to selectively breed crops
-higher yield
-better quality
-improved nutritional value
-improved resistance to pests and diseases
-adaptability to harsh environments
-faster growing
what are the steps of cloning an animal
-adult cell is removed
-an unfertilised egg cell is removed fro the egg done animal
-cell is enucleated
-enucleated egg cell and nucleus from adult cell combine and fused together by electricity
-zygote divides by mitosis
-embryo is implanted into uterus of surrogate animal
-offspring is genetically identical to parent
