plant transport Flashcards
what does the phloem do
transports sugars like sucrose and amino acids up and down the plant
what does the xylem do
transport water and mineral ions up the stem from the roots
what is lignin
forms in wood or bark and are small holes
what is a vascular bundle
strand of tissues found in the stem that has the xylem and phloem
what is meaning of turgid
when a cell swells up and cytoplasm pushes against the cell wall
what is flaccid
when a cell loses water due to osmosis therefore decreasing in surface area
what does plasmolysed mean
when a cells water contracts, shrinking so much the membrane and cytoplasm splits away from the cell wall leaving gaps
describe a root hair cell
- large surface area
-absorb water and mineral ions
-underground
what is osmosis
the movement of water form an area of high concentration to low concentration through a partially permeable membrane
what is transpiration
the evaporation of water from a plant through the stomata
how does light intensity effect transpiration rate
- if there is light the stomata will stay open for photosynthesis meaning more water is released
how does temperature effect transpiration
the particle have more kinetic energy so rate is increased
how does wind speed effect transpiration rate
water vapour is swept away keeping a low concentration so transpiration speeds up
how does humidity effect transpiration
if the air is humid that means there’s already lots of water in the air so the concentration is less so less water is evaporates DECREASING the rate
stomata
pores on underside of leaves
