homeostasis Flashcards
what is homeostasis
the balance of body functions to maintain a constant internal environment
what is an internal environment
conditions in the body staying constant
tissue fluid
fluid running between cells and blood capillaries
what is osmoregulation
the control of water levels
what is the Meaning of homeothermic?
keeping a constant body temperature
what is the thermoregulatory system
contains receptors of blood temperature
what does a sweat gland do
releases sweat onto the kin surface so sweat can be evaporated off taking body heat with it
what is vasodilation
when blood cells dilate and go nearer the skin surface so heat can be radiated off as a response to being hot
what is vasoconstriction
when blood vessels get smaller and go deeper in the vessels in the skin to avoid the heat radiating off- response to being cold
what is a hair erector muscle
makes hair stand up on end- to trap a layer of heat when cold
what is diabetes
when people can’t produce enough or insulin
shivering
muscles contracting uncontrollably to produce heat
exocrine gland
secretes its products through a duct into the bloodstream eg:salivary gland
endocrine gland
secretes its products directly into the bloodstream eg: pituitary gland or ovaries
what is a gland
an organ that secretes a particular chemical substance
