Selective Breeding Flashcards
Define selective breeding?
When humans artificially select plants or animals to breed for particular characteristics.
State advantages of selective breeding?
Animals produce more meat or milk
Crops with disease resistance
Dogs with gentle temperament
Plants that produce bigger fruit
Explain how a farmer could improve meat yields?
Select cows with these characteristics and breed them together. After selecting the offspring for several generations, the cows would produce a very high meat yield.
Describe how the plasmid can be used to genetically modify a bacterial cell to contain a human gene?
Plasmid is cut using restriction enzymes.
Gene is added to plasmid.
Plasmid is inserted into a bacterium.
Suggest the advantages of cloning mammals in use of medical research into human diseases?
Clones are genetically identical so test results will be similar.
Clones could be GE to have human diseases.
