Selection of the mare for breeding Flashcards
What Mare Performance history is used when selecting?
- reproductive competence overlooked
- breeding for performance traits
What breeding condition is considered ‘the best’ to select?
- 5 on a 9 point BCS scale
What health conditions should be avoided when selecting the mare for breeding?
- hereditary conditions (eg. Osteochondritis dissecans in TB’s)
- Problems that effect fertility, gestation or parturition (injuries, asthma, uterine prolapse ect.)
Why is temperament important to consider when selecting the mare?
Cortisol levels (caused by stress) can cause abortion
What age is considered best to breed from?
<5 years
>12 years
What is the risk of breeding maiden mares?
- sexual maturity?
- early pregnancy loss through inflammation
- aggressive to stallion
Oestrus detection can be difficult - Mothering ability
What is the risk with multiparous mares ?
- endometrosis
What is the anatomy of the normal perineum and vagina?
- 80% below the pelvic floor
- more than10 degree angle
What is the anatomy of an abnormal perinium and vulva?
- more than 80% below the pelvic floor
- less than a 1o degree angle
What is perineal conformation effected by?
- genetics
- increased age
- parity
What can poor perineal conformation cause?
chronic uterine inflammation
What are the three anatomical seals?
- vulval
-vestibular (pelvic floor) - cervical
What is the equation for Caslick’s Index?
length of vulva above the pelvic floor x angle of the vulva
What is considered a normal result of Caslicks index?
<50
What is considered poor conformation using caslicks index?
> 50 - <100
