Selection of appropriate tools, equipment and processes Flashcards
What is a visual prototype?
a scale model which describes the overall shape and size of a product without the functional working parts
What is a proof of concept?
A prototype which shows the key functional and technological components of a design
What is a production prototype?
A representation of how the product is mass produced and how this product looks and functions. often they are batch produced for testing and sale in small user trials
Describe One-Off/ Bespoke production
a single, usually handmade product tailored to the consumers specific needs
What are the advantages and disadvantages of One-Off production?
ADV:
very high quality due to care and skill used
perfectly matched to consumers need
generally uses cheap tooling
DIS:
expensive
very slow
labour intensive
What is Batch production?
Small volumes of products made with jigs, templates and CNC
What is mass production?
Thousands to millions of identical products are made using complex machinery and production lines
What are the advantages and Disadvantages of Mass Production?
ADV:
low unit costs
economies of scale for transportation and materials
highly accurate identical products
very fast
does not need high skilled workers
DIS:
expensive tooling
very hard to change designs mid production
very complicated, requires large coordination of material and manpower
