Accuracy in design and manufacture Flashcards
What is accuracy ?
the conformity a measurement has from a required value
What is a tolerance?
an acceptable range for the accuracy of a measurement to ensure it can fit with all other components made
What is a Datum edge?
a reference surface which all other measurements are drawn from to ensure conformity
How do digital test gauges eliminate errors?
These are computer linked measuring devices which test for error and ensure all measurements are within a tolerance
What are profile projectors/ Optical comparators ?
measuring equipment which projects a desired shape over the silhouette of a part to ensure that it lines up perfectly and matches the correct shape. they are highly accurate up to +/-0.015mm
why are laser micrometers and material thickness sensors useful in accuracy testing?
they are non-contact sensors which do not interfere with delicate products in any way when ensuring the measurements are correct
How do Jigs improve measurements?
jigs guide tools to the correct placement ensuring accurate and reproducible cuts for many production runs
How do fixtures ensure accuracy?
fixtures hold parts in place so the cannot move when worked on ensuring correct placement
How do templates aid measuring and when are they used?
These are rigid shapes which create a consistent profile of the product when marking out to ensure reproducibility in products
What is GD&T [Geometric Dimensions and Tolerancing ] standardisation?
systems for engineering drawings with set rules for symbols and dimensions to ensure clear communication of ideas and manufacturing
What are the ISO GPS [ Geometric Product Specifications ] standards
these are GD&T standards set by the international standards organisation and are aimed at being universal in all engineering settings.
