Selecting Learning Resources for Online Learning Flashcards
Content required by self-directed e-training, also known as computer-based training
purpose-built content, or courseware that is specially designed and developed for the course
Content required by Blended and facilitated e-learning
mix of materials in different formats from a range of sources, including materials produced by learners themselves
Content required by vocational education and training (VET)
low-cost, customizable e-learning learning materials aligned to the training packages in most industries.
A key feature of the online learning model is the use of _______found on the Web.
digital learning resources (e.g. online articles, interactive websites, and podcasts)
The availability of numerous digital multimedia educational resources on the Web makes it a good tool for _______
resource-based learning (RBL)
the ability to locate, evaluate use information — and independent learning skills.
information literacy
2 classifications of sources of learning content (Thiagi, 2008)
- ‘recorded’ sources
- ‘live’ sources
The Australian Flexible Learning Framework classifies learning materials on the Web into two main categories:
- Courseware or “software for courses”: which are purpose-built, computer-based resources designed for education and training settings. Courseware typically follow standards for layout and learning design, and feature various forms of computer-level interactivity with learners.
- Web resources: refer to any information available on the Web that is relevant to learning aims. Web resources are usually left unchanged or unmodified, and the teacher simply provides learners with the links to these resources.
educational content and tools that can be used free of charge and, under certain licenses, adapted or modified, re-mixed, and redistributed
open educational resources (OER)
5 guidelines for selecting learning resources for student use (Herrington et al. , 2001)
- accessibility – resources are organized in ways that make them easy to access and locate
- currency – resources are up-to-date
- richness – resources reflect a variety of perspectives
- purposeful use of media – appropriate media is used; the usability of the resource is enhanced by the media used
- inclusivity – the resources demonstrate social, cultural, and gender inclusivity
UNESCO (2002) identified four elements that have to be considered when talking about Open Educational Resources
- The vision for the service - open access to the resource, with provision for adaptation
- The method of provision - enabled by information/communication technologies
- The target group - a diverse community of users
- The purpose - to provide an educational, non-commercial re-source“ (UNESCO 2002, p. 24)
2 main properties of OER
- free access ‘enabled by information and communication technologies’ and
- a ‘non-commercial purpose’ (UNESCO 2002, p.24)
open educational resources are largely digital assets (music, images, words, animations) put together into a logical structure by a course developer who has attached an __________ to it (McAndrew & Santos, 2009)
open license
defined as practices which
○ support the (re)use and production of OER through institutional policies,
○ promote innovative pedagogical models, and
○ respect and empower learners as co-producers on their lifelong learning p
Open Educational Practices
open educational practices are usage of resources in the frame of __________
