In the hospital setting what are the first 2 lines of medical management for convulsive status epilepticus? Is this medication given fast or slow? What is it mixed with?
- Lorazepam 4mg IV
- Repeat lorazepam 4mg IV if not effective
- Give slowly
- 1:1 with NaCl or water
If lorazepam isn’t effective what is the next line of medication?
What monitoring is important when giving this drug?
- if patient not already taking maintenance phenytoin therapy, give phenytoin at 15 mg/kg as a loading dose at 50mg/min
- cardiac monitoring
If both lorazepam and phenytoin have been shown to be ineffective, what is next in the management of status epilepticus? What medications can be used to achieve this?
Rapis sequence induction and intubation
