When is it considered a seizure disorder?
When the underlying cause cannot be determined
Without clear cause
Idiopathic
Common causes during first 6 months of life
Birth injury, congenital birth defects involving CNS, infections
Common causes from ages 2-20
Trauma, genetic factors
Common causes from ages 20-30
Structural lesions
Common causes for ages > 50
Stroke, metastatic brain tumors
Muscle stiffening
Tonic
Rhythmical jerking
Clonic
Patient is often aware and conscious during this type of seizure
Focal
Hours to days before seizure, sensory/behavior changes
Prodromal
Something that occurs each time, beginning of seizure
Aural
Actual seizure activity
Ictal
Recovery phase after seizure
Post-ictal
Common sx during post-ictal phase
Tired, muscle soreness, no memory of seizure
Constant seizure, OR seizures occur in rapid succession
Status epilepticus
