Seismic Stratigraphy Flashcards
What is Seismic Stratigraphy?
The study of seismic data for the purpose of extracting stratigraphic information
What is sequence stratigraphy?
Study of sed. strata based on their stratigraphic stacking patterns that result from changes in accommodation space
How does seismic work?
Waves pass downward into the earth from a source until they encounter a discontinuity and are reflected back to the surface where they are recorded by a geophone and fed electronically to a recording device
Currently, Seismic strat. uses seismic reflection patterns to:
Identify depositional sequences
Predict the lithology of seismic facies
Analyze relative changes in sea level
Makes stratigraphic interpretations possible such as:
Geological time correlation
Thickness of genetic units
Depositional envrionment of genetic units
Acoustic impedance?
The product of reflecting interfaces at junctions between different rock types
