Segregation of alleles Flashcards
1
Q
What is an allele
A
different version of a gene
2
Q
Why do cells contain only one allele of each gene
A
Alleles (on homologous chromosomes) separate randomly, so gametes contain only one allele of each
gene
3
Q
What is the difference between phenotypes and genotypes
A
Genotype: Genetic make up. The combination of alleles found in a particular individual
Phenotype: Physical traits. The observable characteristics of an individual
4
Q
why do heterozygotes produce gametes of more than one genotype
A
They have two different alleles
Dominant traits are expressed in heterozygotes.
