Seedless Plants Flashcards
Adaptations for living in land
A waxy cuticle to protect against water loss and stomata for gas exchange. Alternation of generations: gametophyte and sporophyte generations.
Gametangia with a protective jacket of sterile cells surrounding the gametes: antheridia (sperm cells) and archegonia (eggs).
Xylem
To conduct water and dissolved minerals.
Phloem
To conduct disolved sugar.
Bryophytes
Unlike other plants they are nonvascular and lack xylem and phloem; the only ones with a dominant gametophyte generation.
Seedless vascular plants
They have vascular tissues and a dominant sporophyte generation. Reproduction depends on water.
Homospory
The production of one kind of spores, they give rise to gametophyte plants that produce both egg and sperm cells.
Heterospory
The production of two kinds of spores, (microspores or megaspores).
