Animal structure and function Flashcards
Tissue
It consists of a group of similarly specialized cells that associate to perform specific functions.
Epithelial tissue
It forms a continuous layer or sheet of cells covering a body surface or lining a body cavity. It functions in protection, absorption, secretion and sensation.
Connective tissue
It cosists of relatively few cells separated by an intercellular substance, composedof fibers scatered throughout a matrix. Fibers can be: collagen, elastic, and reticular. Fibroblasts and macrophages are part of it..
Muscle tissue
It consists of cells specialized to contract. It contains many contractile units called myofibrils.
Nervous tissue
It consists of elongated cells called neurons.
Organ systems
Tissues and organs work together to form a system. 11 systems work together in mammals.
Homeostasis
It is the balance of the internal environment.
Positive feedback system
A deviation from the steady state sets off a series of changes that intensifies the changes.
Negative feedback system
The reversal of a series of changes that deviate from the steady state.
Torpor
It is an adaptative hypothermia where body temperature is maintained below normal levels.
Hibernation
It is a long-term torpor in response to winter cold.
Estivation
It is torpor caused by lack of food or water during summer heat.
