Seed Germination Flashcards
What is seed germination?
The process of a seed becoming a plant
What parts are fully grown seeds required to have?
Embryo, endosperm, cotyledon(s), and a seed coating
What parts support the plant as a food source before photosnythesis?
Cotyledons and endosperm
What happens when an environment is too hot or cold for a plant?
Cold: damage or initiate dormancy Hot: damage
What is required in soil for the plant?
Adequate O2 and CO2
What are the 3 germination steps?
Water absorption, Lag phase, and cell division
What happens in the water absorption phase?
Swells and softens seed coat. Initiates biochemical activity in the seed
How much moisture is needed to germinate monocot starchy seeds?
30% moisture
How much moisture is needed to germinate dicot oily seeds?
50% moisture
What happens during the lag phase?
Begins internal processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and metabolism of food stores
What happens during cell division?
Pushes root out and radicle
What is it called for monocots when the root is covered by a sheath and when leaves are covered by a sheath
Root: Coleorizha Leaves: Coleoptile
What is epigeous in dicots?
The shoot makes a hook and pulls cotyledons and tip through soil and into the air
What is Hypogeous in dicots?
Cotyledons stay underground then decompose
