Leaves structure and Function Flashcards
What is the gas exchange in leaves?
CO2 in and O2 out
What is the cuticle?
Waxy layer that covers upper surface and prevents water loss
What are the veins of a plant?
Transports nutrients, food, and water, made of xylem and phloem
What is mesophyll?
Contains cells that perform photosynthesis because they contain chloroplasts
What are guard cells?
Cells that open and close the stoma
What are stomata?
Openings in the leafs surface. When they open they do gas exchange and transpiration.
What is transpiration?
Allows excess H2O out of leaf
What is the point of having stomata?
Allow gas exchange for photosynthesis
Why is transpiration beneficial?
Prevents enzyme destruction and wilting by cooling the leaves while exposed to sunlight
