Regulation of Plant Growth Flashcards
What is tropism?
A change in the direction of growth or movement of a plant in response to a stimulus
What are the 2 types of plant reponses?
Tropisms and Nastic movement
What is phototropism?
Growing toward light by the stems and leaves of a plant Positive = towards sun, Negative = away from sun
What is geotropism?
Growing towards gravity, root will always grow downward Positive = grows towards gravity Negative = grows away from gravity
What are some other examples of tropisms and what are they?
Thigmotropism: slow response to touch and pressure Chemotropism: response to chemicals Hydrotropism: response to water
What is nastic movement?
Quick turgor responses that do not depend on stimulus e.g Venus flytrap
What are the 2 types of plant hormones?
Growth promoters and growth inhibitors
What are the 3 growth promoting hormones?
Auxins, Gibberellins, cytokinins
What are the 2 growth inhibiting hormones?
Abscisic Acid and Ethylene
