Sedimentary Rocks Flashcards
1
Q
Sediment
A
Loose fragments (matter that has broken off of something) of rocks/minerals
2
Q
How do sediments of rocks loosen
A
They loosen from weathering as it changes the physical and chemical aspects of a rock
3
Q
Regolith
A
A layer of loose rock covering rocks formed from weathering
4
Q
Weathering
A
When rocks break down over time due to long exposure to the earth’s atmosphere
5
Q
Clasts vs Talus
A
Clasts = Sediments of a rock Talus = A pile of rocks at the bottom of a cliff
6
Q
What are Joints caused by
A
Changes in temperature can cause joints (cracks/fractures in rocks) in rocks. It is the changes in temperature over a period of time which causes the rocks structure to break down over time.
Temperature increase = rocks expand
Temperature decrease = rocks contract
