Drifting Continents and Spreading Seas - Plate Tectonics Flashcards
Tectonic plates
Large slabs of the lithosphere (outermost layer of the earth)
Plate boundary
Where 2 or more tectonic plates meet and where most earthquakes and volcanos occur
Continental drift
The theory that the earth’s continents move over time
Divergent plate boundary
Where 2 tectonic plates move in opposite direction of one another and as a result, magma from the earth rises to form a new crust (outer layer of the earth)
Convergent plate boundary
Where 2 tectonic plates move towards and collide with one another resulting in a crust being destroyed and subduction (when one tectonic plate slides below another tectonic plate). It may result in earthquakes and volcanoes.
Transform plate boundary
Where 2 tectonic plates slide past each other causing shallow earthquakes
Continent
Large piece of land
