Sedative/Hypnotic Flashcards
Define Axiolytic
Sedation, reduce anxiety, CNS suppresion
Benzodiazapines Pharmacodynamics
Potentiate GABAergic inhibition at all levels of CNS, BZ binding sites are part of GABA-A receptor, the BZ do not directly activate the receptor but they enhance the effect of GABA binding=greater inhibition
Barbiturates Pharacodynamics
Interact w/GABA by increasing duration of the GABA gated chloride channel opening
Dangerous effect of axiolytic and anesthetics
At higher doses may induce anterograde amnesia-inability to remember event while using drug, induce “date rape”
Patient has a difficult time following directions, seem drowsy and have diminished motor skills. What medication would cause these adverse effects?
Benzodiazepines and Barbiturates: Daytime drowsiness, impaired judgement, diminished motor skills, adverse impacts on driving ability, job performance, personal relationships, can’t learn new info
Diazepam (valium) acts as what two drug types?
- ) Benzodiazepine: Sedative and pre-anesthesia anxiety releiver
- ) Antispasmolytic: Muscle Relaxor
List the Newer Hypnotic Drugs
Lunesta, Ambien, Sontata, BuSpar
New Hypnotic Drugs also treat what besides acting as a sedative
Treat epilepsy and seizure
