Secularisation Flashcards
Bruce - for
Religious belief is usually the last resort when science and technology fails. e.g cancer
Morality - for
Traditional religious based views of abortion, marriage and homosexuality now have little impact on peoples behaviour
Structural differentiation - for
Many of the churches original functions have been taken over by other institutions e.g hospitals and schools
Herzberg - for
Religions are going against their traditional values in order to try and fit into a new society, this makes them look weak e.g acceptance of homosexuality
Heelas - against
The world is going through a spiritual revolution, where people are rediscovering religion in personalised forms e.g ‘pick and mix’
Davie - against
Believing in god may not neccesarily mean attending church, people may practice religion in private which gives the outlook that religiosity is declining
Ethnocentralality - against
Research has been criticised for being ethnocentric, by focusing on traditional western religions such as christianity
