+ Price
Execution is cheaper than keeping a prisoner in prison for life at the states expense.
+ Deterrent
The death penalty acts as a deterrent. It is likely to stop most people from committing the crime in the first place.
+ Society
Society can be free of its most dangerous people.
+ Victims families
Execution helps bring satisfaction and closure to victims families.
Reasons for:
\+ Retribution \+ Price \+ Deterrent \+ Society \+ Victims families
- Sanctity of Life
Human life is important and should not be taken in any circumstances. Life is sacred; no one has the right to kill another person.
- Not a deterrent
A UN survey in 1988 and 1996 found no evidence that capital punishment acts as a deterrent. Capital crimes do not seem to drop in countries with the death penalty.
- Wrongfully
They have been many occasions of innocent people wrongfully executed.
- Martyrs
Terrorists who are executed could end up as martyrs encouraging others.
- Not the worst punishment
Execution can be seen as an easier sentence than imprisonment. Life in prison is a greater deterrent to many criminals, which is why some try to commit suicide.
Reasons against:
- Sanctity of Life
- Not a deterrent
- Wrongfully
- Martyrs
- Not the worst punishment
