Section Five Gasketed Joints Flashcards
What do flanges do?
Flanges connect piping and components together in a system by use of bolted connections.
Flanged connections create ease of what?
Dismantling and separation of piping, and equipment for repair and regular maintenance.
Weld neck flanges provide good service in what?
A wide range of temperature and pressure conditions in both static or intermittent flows.
What does a slip on flange allow when fitting?
Ease of positioning before welding.
How should a slip on flange be welded (type of weld)?
With fillet welds.
The inside weld on a slip on flange is accomplished how?
By pulling the pipe back approximately the wall thickness of the pipe from the end of the flange and welding the end of the pipe to the inside of the flange.
What is another name for a lap joint flange?
Van stone flange.
What is a lap joint flange?
Consists of both a stub end and a flange.
When should a lap joint flange be used?
In conditions where non-alignment may cause problems.
Describe the material make up of a lap joint flange.
The flange itself may be made from less costly carbon steel. The stub end is made from the pipe material.
What is a reducing flange and what is its advantage?
This flange changes the line size without adding an extra fitting.
When should a reducing flange NOT be used?
The reducing flange changes the line size abruptly it is not recommended where flow disturbance or turbulent conditions will cause problems.
Socket weld flanges are joined to pipe the same way socket weld fittings are. It is used primarily on:
Small piping and low-pressure applications.
What is a blind flange and it’s use?
Blind flange is a solid flange plate used to close off the end of pipe, fittings, valves, and/or equipment.
Spectacle blinds are similar to a blind flange. What is the advantage to a spectacle blind and how does it work?
Spectacle blinds have an open end and a closed end. Opposite ends can be used to stop flow or allow flow. The advantage is at a quick glance you know if the line is open or not.
When are screwed/threaded flanges often used?
In situations where welding is not practical or desired it is mostly used in commercial application on low-pressure and small piping.
What is an orifice flange and it’s purpose?
Orifice flanges are always used in pairs are used in conjunction with an orifice plate for measuring flow of liquids and gases within a piping system.
How do you orifice flanges differ from other flanges?
They are pre-drilled with tapped holes made in the flange rims to accommodate metering piping.
Name four face types for flanges.
Raised face. Flat face. Lap joint. Ring joint.
Name two flange face finishes.
Smooth finish. Serrated finish.
A) serrated concentric grooves.
B) serrated spiral grooves.
Of all flange face types which one is the more common?
Raised face: used in the majority of flange applications for pressures up to 900 psi.
What does large male and female flange faces provide?
Ample gasket sealing area while still giving good gaskets support.
The large tongue and groove gasket face provides what?
Good gasket compression under low bolt loading and excellent gasket containment under high-pressure service.
Describe the use of a flat face flange.
Used commonly on cast iron flanges and as mating flanges two pumps and valves and low pressure applications.
