What is a first person narrator?
Tells the reader directly about their feelings and experiences. The text is viewed from the characters eyes
What is a third person narrator?
Tells the story from a detached viewpoint, as a voice separate from the characters
What is a third person omniscient narrator?
Let’s the reader see into the minds and thoughts of all the characters
Give examples of figurative language
Imagery - creates a scene in the readers mind
Similes - when something is described in comparison to something else
Metaphor - creates a comparison
Personification - attributes of a person are given to abstract or non human things
Symbolism - where a word or phrase represents something else
What are the two categories of rhetorical language?
Phonological and structural
What is phonological rhetorical language?
Manipulates sound. Words or phrases might be used because they sound good
What is structural rhetorical language?
Affects the overall meaning of a text by manipulating its structural features
What are the features of phonological rhetorical language?
Rhyme - contributes to the musical quality of a verse. It adds emphasis to certain words.
Alliteration
Assonance - repetition of vowel sounds in the middle of words, e.g. ‘Hoover’ and ‘manoeuvre’
Onomatopoeia - a written sound, e.g. Buzz
What are the features of structural rhetorical language?
Repetition - used to add emphasis or persuasiveness. It can add power to a subject to help to a dramatic climax

Why might characters speak in different ways?
To influence the audiences opinion of them
How does dialogue help the relationships between characters?
It allows the audience to understand whether certain characters get along, or if there is tension.
It also tells you about a characters personality through their interaction with other characters
What is the difference between dialogue in literary texts and natural conversation?
In plays and novels, the dialogue tends to be organised and fluent.
In everyday conversations, dialogue contains a lot of non-fluency features due to its spontaneity
What are the three main types of fiction?
Prose(books), poetry and plays
