What is a dialect?
A variation in a language, with its own distinctive features of vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation
How does dialect differ from accent?
It refers to specific words you use, not just how you say them
What form of grammar do regional accents use?

Studied people’s perceptions of different accents. Participants listened to recordings of different accents while they looked at photos of people.
It was found that participants rated the intelligence of the people in the photos based on which accent they thought they had.
Yorkshire accents were rated most interlligent and the Birmingham accent was rated least intelligent. Goes to prove how strong stereotypes are
What is standard English?
A social dialect. It’s usually associated with educated, middle and upper class people. It’s the way you’re taught to use English at school, and the language of formal speech and writing
Which fields would you most likely find standard English?
Education, media, formal documents, formal speech
