Section A: New Tech Flashcards
What is automation and two types
Enables repetitive tasks by assembly lines
Software automation- computer based tasks
Industrial automation- physical tasks
Give 4 advantages to automation
Increased speed and efficiency
Accurate and consistant output
Reduced labour costs and works 24/7
Can work in variety of environments
Give 4 disadvantages of automation
Replaces workforce- job loss
No human input
Up skilled workforce to maintain robots
Expensive
What is crow funding
Using socials to reach a large audience to help fund a project or venture by contributing a small amount
What is virtual marketing/ virtual retail
Using the internet to reach wider audience and potential clients to promote a product.
What is a cooperative
An enterprise commonly owned and run by the members customer/workforce to enable people with same business interest have protection/voice
What’s fair trade
Better prices, working conditions and fair terms of trade in less economic developed countries
Eg fruit, Coffee, chocolate, wine and cotton
Why do companies use life cycle assessment
LCA is a way for them to assess the environmental impact of a product during the different stages of a products life
Explain life cycle assessment
Extraction, processing: aoumnt of energy used to extract raw material/to produce it with other methods- ready for manufacturing
Manu. , producn. : energy req to manipulate material into sell product
Distribution: packaging& transport to user
Use
End life
Explain waste disposal
Waste materials can be reused internally for other parts
Cost of materials recouped through sale of recycled waste
Companies generate energy from waste materials like biomass
What is market pull
When market needs product, designers will meet demand in response to market forces and customer needs
Eg low energy lamps, recyclable bags
Whats technology push
When tech advances so much that u can invent/develop (new) products
Often making them smaller, cheaper/more efficient
Give 3 advantages of CAD
Accurate
Changes and corrections easily made
Designs can be viewed and shared simulatainously
Give 3 disadvantages of CAD
Cost of software
Work may be lost when data corrupted/hacked
Time taken to learn complex software
What is FMS
Flexible manufacturing system
a method of production designed to easily adapt to changes in quantity/type of product being made
