In a medical emergency help can be sought from passengers, who would we ask for via the PA? whom is eligible to assist us?
Registered Medical Professionals to include;
Medical Doctor
Medical Nurse
Paramedic
Unregistered Medics including;
Technician / Medics / First Aider
Fire Service / Police
What should you do in the event of a sharps injury?
Place sharp in sharps box and retain
Encourage bleeding of the injured site
Thoroughly wash the area with soap
Cover the injury with a clean dressing
According to the Medical Action Plan, what roles do the first 3 CC undertake when dealing with a casualty?
Responder
Assistant
Communicator
What must you do or check when administering medication to a passenger?
Check casualty allergies or other medications taken
Check dosage, expiry and directions of use
Record date/time and dosage given
Record Name/Age/Address/Doctor of casualty
Record Name and credentials of assisting passengers
Complete Crew and Pax Medical Form
According to the Medical Action Plan, what are the actions of the Responder?
Respond to Medical situation
Call for assistance verbally or call bell repeatedly
Treat casualty until supported/relieved
According to the Medical Action Plan, what are the actions of the Assistant?
Get assistance of third CC
Obtain appropriate medical equipment ie; PO/FAK/EMK/AED/PM
Return to the scene to assist
Assist with Medical Professional - especially with contents of EMK
According to the Medical Action Plan, what are the actions of the Communicator?
Inform the Commander of the incident ASAP
Make PA for Medical Professional
How can you protect yourself against infection or contamination when dealing with a casualty?
Wear surgical gloves
Use Pocket Mask for CPR
Be mindful of sharps injuries
Wash hands/clothing after treatment
At the conclusion of a Medical incident what should you do if you have used any equipment from the FAK or EMK?
Note which items have been used and how many remain
Refer to Minimum Contents List and seal with Yellow or Red seal depending on qty remaining
The relevant FAK should be entered into the Cabin Defects Log
What will the Commander do if the casualty cannot be treated or stabilised by the personal and equipment onboard?
A diversion and unscheduled landing is carried out ASAP
The FD will need time to prepare for this so early communication is essential
