Section 6 Communication : Technology and Consequences Flashcards
what is serial data transmission?
this is when bits are sent one bit at a time over a single wire from the source to destination
what is parrallel data transmission
several bits are sent simultaneoulsy over a number of parrallel wires
what are the advantages of serial over parrallel
lower costs as fewer wires are required
no chance of a crosstalk occuring
more reliable
signal frequencies can be much higher
what is bit rate
the speed at which data is transmitted
what is baud rate
the rate at which the signal changes
what is the formula to work out bit rate
baud rate x number of bits per signal
what is bandwidth
this is the range of frequencies that a transmission medium can carry
what is latency
the time delay between the moment that transmission of the first byte or packet of a communication starts and when it is received at its destination
what is synchronous transmission
data is transferred at regular intervals that are timed by a clocking signal
what is asynchronous transmission
this is when one byte at a time is sent with each character being preceded by a start bit and followed by a stop bit
what is a protocol
a set of rules relating to communication between devices
what is a lan
local area network
number of computing devoces on a single site or in a single building connected by cables
name all of the topologies
bus
star
ring
mesh
what is a mac address
media access control address
somethinmg that is hard coded onto the card by the manufacture that uniqely identifies the device
what is a client server network
one or more computers known as clients are all connected to one main powerful computer known as the server
