Section 6 Chapter 34 - Wireless Networking, CSMA and SSID Flashcards
Wi-Fi
A local area wireless technology that allows a device to connect to the internet via a WAP
Station
A combination of a computer and a wireless network interface controller.
Multiple stations share the same frequency channel
Wireless network interface controller
A network interface card with wireless capabilities
What is needed to connect to a wireless network (2)
- Wireless Network Interface Controller
- Wireless Access Point
How does a WAP connect to the internet
With a router
What does SSID stand for
Service Set IDentifier
SSID
The informal ‘name’ of the network which can be used to identify it
How to protect a wireless network (3)
- WPA or WPA2
- MAC whitelist
- SSID broadcast disabled
What does CSMA/CA stand for
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance
CSMA/CA
A protocol in which a node listens to the channel and waits until it is idle before transmitting it’s data. If the channel is active it waits a random amount of time before checking again.
How to counteract the problem of hidden nodes
RTS/CTS (Request to send / Clear to send)
RTS/CTS
Once the channel is idle the node transmits a RTS. If it then receives a CTS back it then sends its data
Purpose of an SSID
It is usually a human readable string that acts as an informal name for the network so that it can be told apart from other networks
