at pater Anchises penitus convalle virenti
But deep (in) a green valley father Anchises
inclusas animas superumque ad lumen ituras lustrabat studio recolens
was surveying the souls enclosed and about to go to the light above considering (them) with eagerness
omnemque suorum forte recensebat numberum, carosque nepotes
and by chance he was counting all the number of his people, both his dear descendants
fataque fortunasque virum moresque manusque
and the fates and fortunes of the men, both their customs and ways.
isque ubi tendentem adversum per gramina vidit Aenean, alacris palmas utrasque tetendit,
and when he saw aeneas opposite making for (him) over the grasses he stretched out both palms eagerly,
effusaeque genis lacrimae et vox excidit ore
tears poured (over) his cheeks and a cry fell from his mouth:
“Venisti tandem, tuaque exspectata parenti vicit iter durum pietas? Datur ora tueri,
“At last you have come, and has your awaited piety to your parent conquered the harsh journey? Is it granted (to me) to look on your face,
nate, (tua) et notas audire et reddere voces?
son, and to hear and reply to known voices?”
