Section 3 - Computer Hardware and History Flashcards
Name the 1st Generation Hardware, Programming Language, and Purpose.
1) Vacuum Tubes
2) Machine Language
3) Military Use
Name the 2nd Generation Hardware, Programming Language and Purpose
1) Transistors
2) Transfer from Machine Language to Assembly Language
3) Beginnings Business and scientific research (COBOL and FORTRAN)
Name the 3rd Generation Hardware, Programming Language and Purpose
1) Integrated Circuits
2) Higher level programming language
3) Widespread business use and introduction to personal use
Name the 4th Generation Hardware, Programming Language and Purpose
1) Microprocessors - (Multiple Integrated circuits on a silicon chip) and intro of AI
2) High-level Assembly language
3) Use for just about everything
What are the 3 parts of the CPU and what do they do?
1) ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) - Performs operations on data (can include addition and subtraction)
2) Control Unit - Sends commands to instruct the other hardware components what to do
3) Process Register - Includes storage cells to hold data
What is a Bus?
Name the different bus types and what they do.
Buses - Connect hardware devices to send information between said devices
Address Bus - Carries the destination of the data and where the data is assigned to be processed
Control Bus - Sends commands on what to do with the data from the CPU to the other hardware devices
Data Bus - Carries data form one component to another
What is the purpose of the system clock?
It controls the speed of the system. The faster it ticks the faster the system will work. The slower the tick the slower the system will work.
Name the 5 types of communication devices and how they transmit data
Modem - Sends data via coaxial cables or phone line
Bluetooth - Connects 2 devices wirelessly
Wireless - Is able to send data without the use of a wire
Satellite - Uses radio signals to send data via Satellites
Network Cables - Sends data via Network cables
