section 3 (8) define enantiostasis as the maintenance of metabolic and physiological functions in response to variations in the environment and discuss its importance to estuarine organisms in maintaining appropriate salt concentrations Flashcards
Define enantiostasis
the maintenance of metabolic and physiological functions in response to variations in the environments
what is the key difference between enantiostasis and homeostasis?
The key difference, in enantiostasis is its taking in to account fluctuating environmental conditions i.e. estuaries.
What is an Estuary?
The flow of a freshwater river with different salinity levels due to tidal features. High tide will push saltwater further into the river,
Why is it important to maintain the correct salt levels in cells?
To prevent too much osmotic stress on an organism. For example, marine mammals, and most fish maintain homeostasis of their salt and water levels regardless of osmotic pressure.
