section 1. (6) outline the role of the nervous system in detecting and responding to environmental changes Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
coordination- detects information about the organisms internal and external environment, transmits the information to the control centre to generate a response
what are the two parts of the nervous system?
- the CNS (central nervous system)
2. the PNS (peripheral nervous system)
what is the CNS?
the CNS consists of the brain and spinal chord. It receives and processes information and coordinates responses
what is the PNS?
consists of the nerves and the ganglia surrounding the brain. it transmits information between the CNS and the interneurons/ effectors.
What do receptors do?
Detect changes and transmit information about them in the form of electrochemical nerve impulses tot eh CNS via sensory neurons
what does the CNS do with the information gathered from the receptors?
- processes and transfers to effectors
- stimulates effector response
