section 1. (9) identify some responses of plants to temperature change Flashcards
What are 5 responses to temperature that plants undergo?
1) transpiration
2) change in leaf orientation
3) leaf fall
4) seed dispersal
5) vernalisation
explain transpiration
- evaporation of water from stomates cools the plants
o Rate may increase with a rise in temperature
o Many plants close their stomates at temps above 30 degrees to reduce water loss
explain the change in leaf orientation
to adjust the surface area of the plant exposed to the sun- preventing overheating and dehydration caused by excessive water loss
explain leaf fall
plants such as eucalypts drop their leaves during dry, hot weather to reduce surface area
explain seed dispersal
in response to fires plants such as the Hakeas do this because the soil will be nutrient rich and there will be a lack of competition
explain Vernalisation
some plants will not flower until they are exposed to a specific temperature for a specific period of time (tulips)
