What are the characteristics of rational recreation?
- became more ruled based with officials

What is rational recreation?
A sudden increase in sport. Sport became more organised and was highly structured with rules. Spectators increased aswell as players.
Describe the development of public schools
1-lots of leisure time, drinking gambling etc, mob sports
2-headmasters banned mob sports, did sports to allow pupils to use energy and kept them in the grounds
3- sports became organised, games, rules, skills developed
4- house matches by house captains, form of social control
5- inter schools, encouraged participation, standards improved, facilities developed, schools were advertised on the playing fields
What 3 social skills developed from public sports?
1- fair play was promoted. Abiding by the rules was more important than winning
2- athleticism. Developed physical and moral side due to sport
3- codification. Rules became formalized when boys progressed to uni
Why were the public school boys encouraged to play sport?
- promote teamwork
- discipline respect for others
- stop riots
- use up there energy
- develop physical led and morally
- develop roles in society (some became coaches)
What are the factors influencing rational recreation?
- transport (more fixtures, shared rules and tactics)(roads were improved)
- facilities (churches and factories)
- industrialisation (wanted their workers to be civilised
- no room for mob sports due to urbanization
- media (newspaper showing fixtures and results
- more leisure time (shorter days which allowed more spectators to bring money)
What is class divisions?
Initially the working class were excluded from sports played by middle and upper class because they were 'fitter' due to working - only amateur men were permitted to play

1904 - model course
1919 - syllabus of PT
1933 - different syllabus of PT
1952 - moving and growing
What were the characteristics of the model course?
- involved military drill exercising
- weapon training, deep breathing
- command response
- large numbers in small space
- obedience and discipline
- developing health + fitness (prep for war)
What were the characteristics of 1919 syllabus of PT?
- physical activity could be used for enjoyment, as well as health and fitness
- still therapeutic, posture etc
- still formal
- age differentiation introduced
- games were played (dance)
- teachers had more freedom
What were the characteristics of syllabus 1933 PT?
- still teacher demanded but more freedom
- athletics, gymnastics
- Pe kit introduced

What were the characteristics of moving and growing in 1952?
