What are the characteristics of play?
Fun, little pre-planning, changeable rules,intrinsic value, fantasy world, childish
What is play?
An activity purely undertaken for enjoyment and fun
What are the objectives of adult play?
- Escape from reality

What are the objectives of child play?
Test boundaries, experience risk, learn social skills, respect for eachother, social interactions
What is PE?
A body of knowledge, learnt by taking part in physical activity
What are the characteristics of Pe?
- learning the rules for a variety of sports
- develops a lifelong engagement for sport
- enables understanding of health related fitness issues
What are the aims of PE?
- stick to the rules
- take on different roles (official, coach)
- understand healthy lifestyle
- evaluate and analyse yours and others’ performances
- improve physical competence (motor skills)
What are the objectives of PE?
- Physical development (whole movement)

What is recreation?
The refreshment of the mind and body after work, especially by engaging in enjoyable activities
What are the characteristics of recreation?
- to refresh the mind/body
- recuperating/recovering from stress (work)
- recreating (being creative, activities for self fulfillment)
What are the similarities between play, leisure and recreation?
- flexible
- enjoyable
- no pressure to take part
- mostly intrinsic
- choice
- satisfaction
What is active leisure?
Being physically active in ones leisure time
What are the characteristics of active leisure?
- doesn’t have to be sports based
- doesn’t require joining a club
- flexible times and enjoyment
- any ability
- doesn’t have set times or need to buy expensive equipment to take part
What is the objective of active leisure?
- placed on lifetime sports ( can be taken part throughout lifetime allowing health benefits to be gained
What is outdoor recreation?
Partaking in an activity in a natural environment
What are the objectives of outdoor recreation?
- escaping day to day life
- extending experience
- learning about and enjoying the environment
- being active and invoked in a lifelong sport
What is an outdoor adventurous activity?
Partaking an activity in a natural environment with the element of risk
What are the objectives of OAA?
- fear, excitement
- develop self reliance
- accepting trust off others
- developing leadership and decision making skills
- developing trust and teamwork
Give examples of urban adaptation of OAA
Climbing - climbing wall
Orienteering - park/school ground
Canoeing - swimming pool
- mountain biking - indoor tracks
What is the difference between actual and perceived risk?
- Perceived = when you think there is a sense of danger which is encouraged by leaders
- actual = real danger by the natural enviro men which can be planned to avoid. Their safety is dependent on their skills and ability
Do OAA have rules?
They are aren’t bound by the rules and governing bodies, done by the participant on the level of risk and danger to accept
What do young people gain from OAA?
- Improve social skills (communication)
- improve confidence/self esteem
- improve motor skills
- give qualification or later life career options
- give health and safety knowledge
