Section 21: Interactions Of Host And Pathogen Flashcards
Intracellular Pathogen
Ability of the tubercle bacillus to resist the damaging effects of degradation enzymes contained in lysosomes
Extracellular pathogens
Capsule that is slippery to phagocytes and prevents ingestion
Opportunistic Infections
Nonpathogenic organisms cause disease
Virulence factors
Any feature or product of a microorganism that directly contributes to the ability to cause disease
Avirulent microbes
Do not cause disease in humans
Exotoxins
Purposely secreted from microbe
Endotoxins
Released only when microbe is damaged or lysed
Systemic infection
Spread via blood or lymphatic system
Focal infection
Spread from a locale
Acute infection
Begin abruptly with severe effects
Chronic infection
Appear gradually, last for extended period
Subacute infection
Intermediate duration and system severity
Primary infection
Infection caused by the organism itself
Secondary infection
Infection caused by a different organism than that one that caused the original infection
Subclinical
Asymptomatic
Inapparent infection
Show no symptoms
