Section 2: Respiration Flashcards
Which cells does respiration occur in?
All cells
How does cell respiration work?
Cells break down food molecules to release their stored energy
What are waste products of aerobic respiration?
Carbon Dioxide & Water
What is oxygen used for in cell respiration?
To oxidise food
How do we maintain a steady body temperature?
From the heat released from aerobic respiration
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)
What is the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Where is the energy released in?
The mitochondria of cells
Which of the two respirations requires oxygen?
Aerobic Respiration
Which of the two respirations doesn’t require oxygen?
Anaerobic Respiration
Which of the two respirations produce less energy and why?
Anaerobic Respiration does, because there is not as much glucose to break down
Why is anaerobic respiration good?
As it lets cells that don’t have enough oxygen to respire
What does broken down glucose get converted in when anaerobically respired in yeast?
It is converted to ethanol and carbon dioxide
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?
Glucose -> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide (+ Energy)
What is the symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?
C6H12O6 -> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Why does ethanol produce a lot of heat?
As they have a lot of stored energy; therefore, they are a good fuel
When do muscles switch from aerobic respiration to anaerobic respiration?
When the muscles aren’t getting enough oxygen because they are being too worked that the blood can’t deliver oxygen quickly enough
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles?
Glucose -> Lactic Acid (+ Energy)
What is the symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles?
C6H12O6 -> 2C3H6O3
What does anaerobic respiration allow overworked muscles to do?
Carry on working for a short period of time
What does the worker have to do once he they have used anaerobic respiration for a long period of time to supply oxygen to their overworked muscle?
They have to oxidise the lactic acid in their blood stream.
What is an oxygen debt?
The volume of oxygen required to oxidise the lactic acid in a person’s blood stream
What do cells take in and give out in aerobic respiration?
Take in glucose and oxygen and give out carbon dioxide and water
What part of the cell is in charge of allowing certain things to go in and out of the cell?
The cell membrane
