Give an example of a staff member who may have a role in an emergency in addition to the lifeguard team
Gym staff, reception staff, duty manager
What role do lifeguards play during an emergency?
Following all procedures set out in the PSOP (Pool Safety Operating Systems) in accordance with their training
How and why will incident training improve the team’s response in an emergency?
Knowing all your lines of communication allows for a swifter rescue where all team members are contributing their training and PSOP knowledge together allowing for a quick, efficient rescue.
What can go wrong if communication breaks down during an emergency response?
Team members are unaware of one another’s decision making and thoughts. Certain procedures may be taken twice which not only is wasting time, it’s also a danger to the casualty.

Following training to ensure all levels of communication are followed.
Follow EAP about how to manage the incident and when emergency services should be contacted.

How to manage a lost child in building, managing the guardian, safety of child if found, service contacts
What action might a lifeguard take if there if a lost child is reported?
Check pool facilities ensuring child is not unsupervised in the pool in any immediate danger
Obtain description of child, detailed as possible
Position staff at entrances and exits so child doesn’t leave building
Check surrounding area around the facilities
Example of what the EAP will include regarding a found child
Get description of parent or guardian
Ensure child is given back to correct person, usually noticed by expression on child’s face when seeing a particular person
Why is it important to act if water clarity becomes compromised?
If water clarity is compromised that means the lifeguards is unable to see every aspects of the pool therefore a hazards to the health of the pool users
