Section 19: Network Management Flashcards
What is Latency?
Time that it takes for data to reach its destination across a network
What is Bandwidth?
Maximum rate of data transfer across a given network
What is Jitter?
When a time delay in the sending of data packets over a network connection occurs
What is a Granular Trap regarding SNMP?
Trap messages that distinguish each message as a unique message being received
What is a Verbose Trap regarding SNMP?
Traps configured to contain all the information about a given alert or event as a payload
What is a Management Information Base (MIB)?
The structure of the management data of a device subsystem using a hierarchical namespace containing object identifiers
What is a Traffic Log?
Contains information about the traffic flows on the network
What is an Audit Log?
Contains a sequence of events for a particular activity
What is System Logging Protocol (Syslog)?
Used to send logging data back to a centralized server
How many **Logging/Severity Levels ** are there?
0-7 (8 levels)
What is Level 7 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Debugging. Useful information for developers
What is Level 6 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Information. Normal operational message that requires no action
What is Level 5 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Notice. The events are unusual
What is Level 4 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Warning. An error will occur if action is not taken soon
What is Level 3 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Error. Something is preventing proper system function
What is Level 2 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Critical. A failure in the system’s primary application requires immediate attention
What is Level 1 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Alert. A condition should be corrected immediately
What is Level 0 of the Logging Levels? What is the indication?
Emergency. The system has become unstable
What is a Link State?
Communicates whether a given interface has a cable connected to it and a valid protocol to use for communication
What is Duplex?
Occurs when devices can both communicate at the same time
What is Half-Duplex?
Occurs when devices can either transmit or receiver, but cannot do both at the same time
What are Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRCs)?
Number of packets received that failed the CRC check upon receipt
What is a Giant?
Any Ethernet frame that exceeds the 802.3 frame size of 1518 bytes
What is a Runt?
An Ethernet frame that is less than 64 bytes in size
What should be monitored when dealing with network devices?
- Temperature between 50-90 F
- Maintain a humidity range of 40-60%
- Receives clean power
- Flood-Free
What is NetFlow Data?
Defines a particular traffic flow based on the different packets that share the same characteristics
