Section 11: Wireless Networking Flashcards
What is a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)?
A wireless network that links two or more devices using wireless communication to form a LAN within a limited area.
What is Ad-Hoc?
Wireless devices communicate directly with each other without the need for a centralized access point
Peer-to-Peer Connection
What is a Wireless Access Point (WAP)?
Expands wired LAN into the wireless domain
What are the 2 types of Wi-Fi?
2.4 Ghz & 5.0 Ghz
What is a Basic Service Set (BSS)?
Basically a network topology that allows all wireless devices to communicate with each other through a common medium, such as an AP.
What is an Extended Service Set (ESS)?
A wireless network, created by multiple APs, which appears to users as a single, seamless network.
What is a Site Survey?
A wireless survey to determine coverage areas
What are Omnidirectional Antennas?
Radiates power equally in all directions
What is a Unidirectional Antenna?
Focuses power in one direction for covering greater distances
What channels will avoid overlapping frequencies in the 2.4 Ghz band?
1, 6, 11
What is Channel Bonding?
Allows you to create a wider channel by merging neighboring channels into one
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11a standard?
5 Ghz, 54 Mbps
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11b standard?
2.4 Ghz, 11 Mbps
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11g standard?
2.4 Ghz, 54 Mbps
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11n standard?
(Wi-Fi 4)
2.4 & 5 Ghz, 150 Mbps/600 Mbps (MIMO)
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11ac standard?
(Wi-Fi 5)
5 Ghz, 3 Gbps (MU-MIMO)
What is the Frequency and the Bandwidth of the 802.11ax standard?
(Wi-Fi 6)
2.4, 5, and 6 Ghz, 9.6 Gbps (MU-MIMO)
What is a Pre-Shared Key?
A shared secret which was previously shared between two parties using some secure secure channel before it needs to be used
Both AP and client uses same encryption key
What is Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO)?
Uses multiple antennas to send and receive data than it could with a single antenna
What is Multiple User - Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MU-MIMO)?
Allows multiple users to access the wireless network and access point at the same time
What is Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)?
A security standard for computing devices with wireless internet connections. Replaced WEP and follows the TKIP
Look for answer with TKIP and RC4 on exam
What is the Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP)?
A security protocol used in the IEEE 802.11 wireless networking standard
What is Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2)?
Created as part of the IEEE 802.11i standard and requires stronger encryption and integrity checking through CCMP (Counter Mode w/ Cipher Block Chaining Message Authentication Code Protocol)
Look for answer with CCMP and AES on exam
What is Advanced Encryption Standard (AES)?
Uses a symmetric-key algorithm, meaning the same key is used for both encrypting and decrypting the data
What is the Enterprise Mode WPA?
Users can be required to authenticate before exchanging keys. Keys between client and AP are temporary
What is the Enterprise Mode WPA2?
Users are required to use a centralized authentication
What is the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP)?
Authentication performed using 802.1x
What is MAC Address Filtering?
Configures an AP with a listing of permitted MAC addresses
What is a Captive Portal?
A web page that appears before the user is able to access the network resources
What is Geofencing?
GPS or RFID defines real-world boundaries
What is a Rogue Access Point?
Malicious users set up an AP to lure legitimate users to connect to the AP
