Section 17: Network Availability Flashcards
What is Network Availability?
Measure of how well a computer network can respond to connectivity and performance demands that are placed upon it
What is the Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)?
Measures the average time it takes to repair a network device when it breaks
What is the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF)?
Measures the average time between failures of a device
What is Hardware Redundancy?
Devices with two network interface cards (NICs), hard drives, or internal power supplies
What would be considered Active-Active?
Multiple NICs are active at the same time. Makes troubleshooting complex
What would be considered Active-Passive?
One NIC is active at a time.
What types of hardware could be redundant?
Routers, Switches, Firewalls, and Servers
What is Network Interface Card (NIC) Teaming?
Using a group of network interface cards for load balancing and failover on a server or other device.
What is the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP)?
The Interactive Electronic Technical Publications (IETP) open-standard variant of the Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP). Creates a virtual router as a default gateway
What is First-Hop Redundancy Protocol (FHRP)?
Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) uses virtual IP and MAC addresses to provide an “active router” and a “standby router”.
What is Multipathing?
Creates more than one physical path between the server and its storage devices for better fault tolerance and performance
What is a Cold Site?
An available building that does not have any hardware or software in place or configured. Recovery is slow and time-consuming
What is a Warm Site?
An available building that already contains a lot of the equipment. Recovery time is between 24 hours to 7 days.
What is a Hot Site?
An available building that already has the equipment and data in place and configured. Minimal downtime
What is a Cloud Site?
Allows for the creation of a recovery version of an organization’s enterprise network in the cloud.
What is a Recovery Time Objective (RTO)?
Time and service level within which a business process must be restored after a disaster to avoid unacceptable consequences. Use either hot or cloud site.
What is a recovery Point Objective (RPO)?
Interval of time during a disruption before data lost exceeds the BCP’s maximum allowable threshold or tolerance
What is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?
Provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or main power fails
What is a Power Distribution Unit (PDU)?
Distributes electric power, especially to racks of computers and networking equipment located within a data center.
What is a Generator?
Provides log-term power during a power outage in a region
What is the Quality of Service (QoS)?
Enables strategic optimization of network performance for different types of traffic.
What is the Categorization of Traffic?
Determine network performance requirements for various traffic types (voice, video, delay)
What are some ways to categorize traffic?
- Classification
- Marking
- Congestion Avoidance
- Congestion Management
- Policing and Shaping
- Link Efficiency
